Hi! Just wanted to introduce myself and my little one. She's a grey teddy bear hamster, age uncertain, by the name of Nika. I rescued her from a PetCo in February, and we've had an... interesting, relationship since then. She's not hand trained (I know, shame on me, just not sure how to do it) and as long as I don't leave my hand in the cage for long periods of time, she won't get curious and bite it! She's definitely a little hellion, and just got a new bi-level wire cage. My question is, what is safe to give her for treats? I give her apple slices and she loves them, but not sure what else is good for her.... Any tips and advice would be welcome, as I'm a first-time hammy-mom!

Chester the Hammy
Chester has a new cage! Finally. His old cage was a "My first home, hamster cage" and was a great temp cage but too small for a Hamster! So now he has a 10 gallon tank with much more room and toys.

If guinea pigs and rabbits can eat timothy hay.....can hamsters have a taste too?

--Also as suggested I have tried new veggies/treats.

This is the list of food he will eat:
-egg (scrambled or hardboiled)
- red/green bell pepper
-lettuce of all kinds
- bits of cheese
- bacon
- turkey lunch meat
- spinach
- basil
- carrot
- milk bone
How often and what would be best for daily treats?

Chubby Hammie
http://www.petstation.com/hamstercare.html (the site I am using for reference)

I noticed that since it has gotten colder my hammie has been more active :/ weirdo.
My gerbil is slowing down and sleeping more.

He is never out in the morning but was this morning and so I took him out. He is CHUBBY! He has a silent spinner wheel in his cage, he gets almost daily ball time about 10 minutes. He only gets lettuce, egg and the occasional half of a carrot for a treat. We do not give him that yougurt stuff or sugary foods. We used to feed him Hartz Hamster Food from walmart but was reading and saw it was bad stuff plus Hartz has alot of bad press. We now shop at our local feed store/tractor supply.

The best food they have is Bonanza Bounti Buffet Hamster and Gerbil Mix. We bought some because it looked good in the bag.
It has 14% protein, 9% fiber, 6% fat. The first few ingredients were Whole corn, wheat middlings, wheat and oat grains, yellow split peas, soybean meal, flaked wheat, trapper peas, alfalfa meal, dehydrated banana, almond flakes, dehydrated papaya, brewers yeast, coconut flakes, egg flakes and then the vitamins and things I cannot pronounce. http://www.amazon.com/LM-Animal-Farms-Bounti-Buffet-Hamsters/dp/B00065Z59K/sr=1-315/qid=1166629633/ref=sr_1_315/103-1560110-8864669?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden looks like this!

I have a gram and ounce scale so I weighed him. I placed a cup on the scale it weighed one gram, then put him in the cup and the scale went to 155grams. So my chub miester weighs 154 grams about.

According the site I listed above: an adult male hamster should weigh 85-130 g

What am I doing wrong?

chewing on cage
I got a teddy bear hamster a little over a month ago. Lately she has been chewing on the metal bars of her cage, does anyone know of how to stop her from doing this? I don't want her to hurt herself (sometimes when she does it she is lifting her feet up, putting all pressure on the teeth, I'm sure her teeth are strong but not THAT strong). I've tried everything minus getting a new cage which I can't afford. She has a few toys in the cage, a wheel and a tp tube. she also has a small strawberry hut. Every day I take her out and play with her as well as let her run around in her plastic ball. It was suggested that she didn't have enough to chew on so she has a wood cube and a puppy bone but she won't chew on them, she will only chew on the cage. Is there something that I'm overlooking that can solve my problem? thanks.

Hi everyone.

We're getting hammies! 2 females.

We haven't really decided on what type of hamster, so I'm in my research mode trying to figure out

1. the best type of hammie
2. the most nutritious food
3. best playthings
4. healthiest snacks
5. anything else

Thanks so much!

Hi guys, I'm new to this community.

I'm Dickie, 22, and I just got my first hamster since childhood. He's a REW syrian short hair and appears to be fully grown (he's almost too fat for his tubes!). I called him Morrissey or 'Moz' for short.

Reason why I'm posting is rather a sad one: he appears to be VERY ill!
I've only had him 6 days counting today so I don't know if this is due to stress of moving or if he has an infection or something...He's developed a weepy patch of flesh on his flank with the hair almost missing there. He's also been acting rather odd...sleeping on his side outside his nest all exposed...I keep thinking he's died! D:
I noticed two days ago a small patch of missing fur but I thought it happened when he got stuck in a tube...but now it's spreading.
Other than that he seems lively right now...running around in his wheel.

Can anyone help me out? Sorry to have such a depressing into post :(

I read up about hamster skin conditions but they all mentioned flakiness of the skin and his is not flakey at all :/

Information Compilation
Hey guys -

I could use everyone's help if possible. Please read my post here:

Basically, I am trying to compile as much info as possible on various small exotics, to make "care packets" for pet owners who adopt from my rescue. Any and all help would be stellar. <3 Please pass this on. The more voices, the more information.. The more informed people will be, and the happier my rescues will be in their new forever homes. <3

Mange? Demodicosis? Abscess? Tumor?
I don't know much about hamsters, but my sister has two and she has a problem with one of them. She's had them both, 2 males, for about a year in separate cages. Recently as I was peeking in on them, I noticed one has what appears to be a hole in his head.

I usually look at them every so often, but my sister is the one who plays with them mostly. (They don't really like me very much, I got an awful bite the first time I tried...) It seems as if the hole(if it is that) is fairly recent. It's kind of small, but any hole is a bad hole. My mom says it's just hair loss but my sister, me, and her friend all say it looks like a hole, which is terrifying. It's a clean wound(?) with no blood or pus or anything of the sort. It actually looks like a bad case of mange with lesions, but it's nowhere else on his body and it's such a small area... (I've heard of similar things (HLLE) in *FISH*, but not hamsters...)

The hamster is active and curious still and appears not to be ill in any way. The other boy has no problems whatsoever.

I'm just curious what this could be, or if anyone could direct me to a site/forum that has more detailed information. I'm trying to get my mom to bring him to the vet soon, but in the meantime, any ideas???

Baby dwarfs up for adoption!!!
Can anyone in the San Francisco, CA area take on some dwarf hamsters? I found this ad for free hamsters - to quote:

"One of my male dwarf hamsters got into the cage with all of the other females and got them all pregnant. Thus the horde of Dwarf Hamsters have arrived. I am giving them away for free because they are much more bothersome than I can afford and if I could I would pay someone to take them away... I know what people may want little rodents for so for food or for pets, please take them."

I contacted the poster and she said she has approximately 25 at the moment, ranging from 2 weeks old (those she would give away with the mother) to 4 months and beyond. I really don't want to see them end up as snake food, so please pass this on. (Also, if you're somewhere on the way between San Francisco and Los Angeles and think you could give a good home to one or more, please comment about that too, just in case I'm able to make it up there this weekend.)

Thank you!

Hi everyone, I am new here, and I have am basically a new owner. I have a male, syrian hamster named Carmelo. I do not know how old he is but he is probably older...he is a spoiled hamster. He lives in a 20 gallon tank with a happy hut, water, food dish, treat dish, hartz pine shavings, tunnel that he can chew on, and a wodent exercise wheel...He gets treats all the time and he is so sweet! He lets me kiss him and all sorts of stuff...I got him as a easter gift and got him early at April 13th, 2006. He is my first hamster and I know quite alot about them because I researched alot!

Question: In your opinion:
What is the best hamster food and brand?
What is the best bedding and brand?
Any treats that you like for your hamster?
I have a treat dish that I put 1 small piece of wheat bread, 2 small dried pasta pieces, 1 small bit of carrot, 2 small bits of cheese, 2 milk and honey treats, and 2-3 small unshelled unsalted sun flower seeds. Is that too many treats to give him daily?

What a great community this is!

Thanks for your time!

Hello! So, I need to get some advices. I have one dwarf hamster, almost six months old and his name is Diego.

1. At his cage he has the wheel to run round like a crazy squirrel that nobody could sleep, some sawdust and few cotton balls to build up his nest. Does he need anything else just for fun?

2. Usually he eats special hamster's food from pet-shop, the apples and fresh cabbage + water. The question is - what do they like to eat and what is necessary for their health? Today I gave him piece of a cheese and some corn flakes, he took just a little bit of and left it. So, it seems to me, he is not like the regular mouse from cartoons.

3. Does he need to go for a walk outdoors to take some sun and fresh air? May he catch cold?

4. And the last question: do they need a bath?

That's all for now. Thank you!

need hamsters!
Hi! *waves*

I am a pet photographer near Boston, Massachusetts, and I am providing photography for an upcoming book on hamster care. I need models! I do not have hamsters of my own, so I am hoping to find people in my area who will let me come over for a couple of hours and photograph their hamster, or drop their hamster(s) off at my place for a day. (I can care for a hamster, so yours would be safe).

My pet photography portfolio is here:

In exchange for letting me photograph your hamster, I would provide a CD of images. I need to get this done ASAP, so please comment or email me at tammy @rubicat .com (take out the spaces) if you would like to make your hamster famous! :)

serious help
the first night i got my hamster...
just 27 days old...

it was dropped and hide under the
couch. my mother and i finally
got a hold of it, but the poor
thing was squealing so bad in
my hands, i was literally
shaking. it calmed down a bit
and i put it in her new cage..

now whenever she hears me,
she runs up her tube or if
i open the top part of her cage
she runs down her tube and away
from me. i tried to get her
but she gets in defensive mode
and either stands up or rolls
onto her belly...

i dont know what the do. i
dont wanther to be afraid of
me, but it looks like she is
so scared that she wants
nothing to do with me.. i dont
blame her... her first night
here was horrible....
